Did you know July 1st 1879 was recognized as a day to celebrate Canada? In 1879, Canada was called the Dominion of Canada. For many years the holiday was called “Dominion Day”. On October 27th, 1982 “Dominion Day” was officially changed to “Canada Day”. This was because Canada was no longer known as the “Dominion of Canada”.
July 1st is a day to celebrate “Confederation”. Confederation was the joining together of Canada's provinces, or Canada's birthday! In many places, Canada's birthday is celebrated with fireworks displays, educational, artistic and sports activities.
The Government of Canada usually holds a celebration on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, Ontario. Military bands play and official ceremonies are held to wish Canada a happy birthday. The festival ends with fireworks over Parliament Hill.
