Paper Bag Birds

Time Frame: Two 40-minute periods

MOTIVATION:
This activity will demonstrate the idea that sculpture can be an additive process using paper to create a three dimensional bird.

MATERIALS:

  • Paper lunch bags
  • Various colours of construction paper cut into rectangles
  • Markers
  • Tracers cut into the shape of feathers
  • Scissors

WHAT TO DO:

  1. Have children trace “feather” shapes onto construction paper.
  2. Starting from the back of the bag, ask children to glue feathers around the bag stopping at the fold.
  3. Encourage the children to make a pattern as they apply feathers around the bag.
  4. Using markers, instruct children to colour beak and eyes onto the bottom of bag.
