Did you know that water takes up more space when it is ice? This is because as water turns into ice the water molecules expand and take up more space. In the following experiment prove that ice takes up more space than water.

What you need:

• An empty pop bottle.

What you do:

1. Pour water into the plastic pop bottle;
2. Using the aluminum foil, make a loose fitting cap over the top of the plastic pop bottle;
3. Place the plastic pop bottle in the freezer;
4. Leave the plastic pop bottle there until the water freezes;
5. Notice what happens to the aluminum cap as the water freezes.
