Data Management & Probability

Overall Grade Three Expectations:

  • sort, classify, and cross-classify objects and data;
  • collect and organize data;
  • interpret displays of data, present the information, and discuss it using mathematical language;
  • demonstrate an understanding of probability and demonstrate the ability to apply probability in familiar day-to-day situations;
  • relate meaningful experiences about probability.

Ways To Organize Data:

Bar Graph
Horizontal or vertical bars that display data.

Circle or Pie Graph
A graph in which a circle used to represent a whole is divided into parts that represent parts of the whole.

Pictograph
Shows pictures or icons to show data and compare information. Pictographs include keys or definitions of the pictures or icons.

Tally Chart

Counting by groups of five.

1. Mr. Patel's grade three class did a survey about the children's favourite ice cream flavours. There are 30 children in the class. Here is a bar graph showing their results:

Vanilla

Chocolate

Strawberry

Other

  1. How do you know everyone in the class answered the survey question?

  2. Which ice cream flavour was the most popular?

  3. Which ice cream flavour was the least popular?

  4. Does the circle graph below show the same information as the bar graph?
Explain your thinking

2. During a visit to the aquarium, Mr. Patel's class made a tally chart to record their data about the number of different sea creatures they saw.

Dolphins Sea Horses Seal Tropical Fish Sharks

Create a bar graph to show the information on the tally chart. Make sure you put on labels and a title.

= 5 Animals

3. Mr. Patel's class had a pizza party. Four different types of pizza were served. This is the tally chart the class made to record the number of slices of each type of pizza was eaten.

Cheese Pepperoni Veggie Deluxe

A. Using the scale = 5 slices, create a pictograph in the space below, to show the data recorded on the tally chart.

B. How many pieces of pizza did Ms. Patel's class eat altogether? Show your thinking.

C. Which kind of pizza was the most popular?
