Snappy Sound Strings

Did you know musical instruments such as guitars, and pianos can make high or low sounds? These instruments have strings or wires of varying thickness to make the different sounds. When the strings are plucked, they shake or vibrate to make the sound. In the following activity, make your own snappy sound strings.

What you need:

  • Thin rubber bands
  • Thick rubber bands
  • Two tin cans
  • Two small paper bowls

What you do:

  1. With an adult, carefully stretch a thick rubber band to cross over the top of the bowl.
  2. With an adult, carefully stretch a thin rubber band to cross over the top of the second bowl.
  3. With an adult, carefully stretch a thick rubber band to cross over the top of the tin can.
  4. With an adult, carefully stretch a thin rubber band to cross over the top of the second can.
  5. Pluck the rubber bands and listen to the sounds!
