Wonderful Water

Did you know that water is the only substance in nature that comes in three forms - liquid, solid and gas? Water as a liquid is fun to take a bath or splash and swim in. Water as a solid, is fun to use to make snowmen. Water changing into water vapour (gas) is fun to watch, like steam coming out of a teakettle.

Water is made of tiny particles called molecules. When water molecules hold together and form drops, this is water in the form of a liquid. Molecules are so tiny that you cannot see them. When billions of water molecules come together, they can form a puddle, pond, lake, or ocean. Other examples of water as a liquid are rain and drinking water.

What happens to the water in wet clothes when they are outside to dry? The answer is evaporation. Evaporation happens when the hot sun warms the o Earth and the heat from the sun changes water into an invisible water vapour or gas that mixes with the air. Water vapour is always in the air. We just cannot see it. Water vapour is water in the form of a gas.

Water changes into a solid when the air is freezing. This happens when the temperature is very cold, (at least below 0 degrees Celsius). Snow is made when rain freezes on its way to Earth. Other examples of water in the form of a solid are; the frost you see on a window in the winter, or frozen bits of ice called sleet and hail.
